Torres eventually travelled to Spain amidst the travel chaos that is engulfing the UK and Europe to see a Barcelona knee specialist. The resulting news that Torres will be out of action for around six weeks means he will miss facing his beloved Athletico  Madrid in the Europa Cup.

A spoke person from Liverpool Football Club said “It was decided that he would need surgery on a torn cartilage in his right knee. This will be carried out later on Sunday and, as a guide, the usual rehabilitation period for this type of procedure is around six weeks.”

The world cup begins on June 11 and Torre’s fitness will be closely watched by the Spanish coach.  Del Bosque must submit his final 23-man squad for the 2010 World Cup to Fifa by 1 June.

This is the latest in a long line of injuries which have kept Torres sidelined for large proportions of the season; although he has still managed to score 22 goals in all competitions.

The latest injury rounds off what is a poor season for Liverpool Football Club and although Torres may still be fit for the 2010 World Cup, Liverpool will be without his services until next season.
