2010 World Cup: England Squad Selection Possibilities

This seasons English Premiership has been an enthralling one and it is now almost certain to end with my beloved Liverpool FC missing out on the Champions League. Despite this, the competition closing the gap on the so called ‘big four’ can only be a good thing for the Premiership lovers. England World Cup Heroes

So as the 2009/10 club season draws to a climax, the English media are starting to focus more and more on the 2010 world cup in South Africa.

Injuries have historically been at the forefront of the media circus in the last two World Cup build-ups however things are starting to look much better. Despite John Terrys terrible challenge on James Milner in Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final which SHOULD of resulted in more than the yellow card he received. The injury sustained by David Beckham has closed the curtain on an era and resulted in opportunities for the younger English players.

The injury that Wayne Rooney sustained to his ankle in the Champions League has not been as serious as first though, although my feeling is that the Manchester United manager has used it in the usual way to try to fool Bayern Munich. This however has back-fired and as a fan of Liverpool, my smile could not be wider!

It was in fact a truly poor week for the English clubs in the Champions League and while Fulham and Liverpool both progressed in the Europa League/Cup; the English clubs exit can only enhance the rest period that the English Squad players will get prior to the 2010 World Cup.

So with the main squad contingent sitting out the rest of the Champions League campaign and with two other crucial players nearing fitness, Aaron Lennon and Ashley Cole; things are looking rosy for Capello and England.

So who will make the grade for the English World Cup squad?

Well Bobby Zommora who usually lacks clinical finshing is impressing at the moment with vital goals for Fulham in the Europa League/Cup. Whether Capello will risk taking him remains to be seen.  Apart from Wayne Rooneys amazing season propping up Manchester United, Jermain Defoe and Darren Bent have been impressive all season for their respective clubs.

My personal view is that Darren Bent is the man as he is a player who has scored goal after goal all season which has gone most of the way to keeping Sunderland in the Premier League.

If all the players are fit, the defence picks itself with Glen Johnson, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry and Ashley Cole making the back four. Many will say that Wes Brown should be right back but I believe the attacking option Glen Johnson provides puts him slightly ahead of Brown.

In goal there is no better shot stopper than David James and although his calamity status sometimes causes England blushes his experience at the highest level is unsurpassed.

Possible Squad

Midfielders: James Milner, Joe Cole, Aaron Lennon, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick

  3. Michael Carrick should definitely be heading to the World Cup after his form for United this year. Good luck to him and England – they’ll need it!
