2010 World Cup: Spurs Goalkeeper Eyes World Cup

2010 World Cup fever continues as Spurs shot stopper Heurelho Gomes started his career in English football in the worst possible way. A series of high profile blunders made many pundits question his goal keeping ability. The physical nature of the English game seemed to be too much for the player signed from Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2008. Where many players would have let the pressure get to them after the mistakes, Gomes worked on the physical side of his game on the training pitch which he successfully transitioned onto the first team to become a hit with the Tottenham Hotspur fans. tottenham heurelho gomes jpeg

Gomes firmly believes that the English Premiership has made him a better goalkeeper as he has had to learn to cope with the physical side of the league. As a result of his much improved form, he has high hopes of being chosen to compete at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Of his time in England Gomes says “In England there is a lot of physical contact, and, of course, the famous aerial game. When I arrived, I certainly had a hard time staying on my feet because of the constant contact. But in training I got the hang of it. Today, I’m a more complete goalkeeper because of how I adapted to the English style.”

Although he has not played for the Brazilian national side for three-and-a-half-years, he is widely tipped to be included in Dungas squad for the 2010 World Cup finals. Although the number 1 shirt is almost certainly to be worn by Inters Julios Cesar, with the number two shirt worn by Roma’s Doni; it leaves Gomes in a battle for the third spot with Gremio’s Victor.

Gomes believes the trust shown by previous Brazilian coaches will be extended by Dunga as he said “I always used to be trusted by my coaches. I hope it’s the same in this team, so that I can go to the World Cup. Dunga knows that I can play for the team in any situation. He knows how I behave and he knows by football, but that isn’t enough for me to guarantee a spot. Competition is strong and it is a good fight with Victor.”
